Soybean Mill and Winnow Box
Making soy tempeh at home requires that the soybeans be split and dehulled. You can buy them online from nuts.com.https://nuts.com/snacks/soybeans/halves.html . There is a wet method, but its messy. This box does both at the same time. The mill is adjusted to just split the beans into 2 to 4 pieces. The split beans slide down the ramp, passing under the Shop Vac attachment. Most of the hulls get sucked up and away. The heaver beans fall down into the collection drawer. By adjusting the slope of the ramp and the height of the vacuum attachment, you can collect most of the hulls but few or none of the beans.
The grain mill is located so that the top is accessible through a 3 7/8 inch hole in the box and the crank shaft sticks through the a 1 1/2 inch hole at the end of the box. The handle is then attached to the shaft and the fill hopper is locked onto the mill through the top panel. The ramp pivots on two ½ inch pins in the shelf at the end panel. I used two finishing nails with the heads sawed off. A 1 inch wood dowel keeps the ramp from popping off the short pins. The ramp slope can be adjusted with the pusher screw. The 1 ¼ inch shop vac pipe is positioned by a pipe clamp and locking screw. Adjust the gap at the bottom of the ramp so the cracked beans drop off the end of the ramp. Adjust the height of the hose attachment above the ramp so that the cracked beans pass under but the seed coats get sucked up. The ramp is tapered down to the width of the hose attachment. Acrylic sides help keep the beans on the ramp.
If necessary, you can pass the beans through the winnow again. Using a funnel, pore the beans slowly into the auxiliary port on the top of the box.
